Nestled in the picturesque setting of Cave Creek, Arizona, Tonto Bar & Grill offers a truly distinctive dining adventure that beautifully melds American classics with Southwestern and seafood influences. This vibrant steakhouse and bar is a culinary gem that captivates guests not only with its varied menu but also with the inviting ambiance that balances rustic charm and upscale comfort.
Step inside or settle into the outdoor patio overlooking a serene golf course backdrop, and prepare to be embraced by a warm, homey atmosphere where the spirit of the Southwest glows through every detail. The air is often filled with a soft Arizona breeze and the distant calls of local wildlife, making each meal more than just dining—it’s an immersive experience.
The menu at Tonto Bar & Grill reads like a love letter to bold flavors and fresh, high-quality ingredients. Signature drinks such as the Prickly Pear Margarita and the creatively spicy Cucumber Jalapeño Margarita set the tone for an elevated Southwest-inspired feast. Guests rave about thoughtful desserts like the tangy Lemon Lime Prickly Pear Meringue Tart and the luxuriously smooth Creme Brulee, which provide the perfect sweet finale.
For starters and lighter fare, the selection includes vibrant salads such as the Cobb Salad with avocado, bacon, and blue cheese crumbles, and the hearty Tumbleweed Salad, featuring black beans, chipotle ranch, and crispy tortilla strips, all with gluten-free and vegan options that respect diverse dietary needs. The Bar and Grill Corn Chowder offers a comforting, creamy sip of Southwest nostalgia, while the Tortilla-Crusted Crab Cakes and Onion-Crusted Walleye provide seafood lovers with elegantly crispy, flavor-packed choices.
The wood-grilled burgers are a popular highlight; the Tonto Burger with its perfectly charred corn-fed patty and the AZ Organic Grass-Fed Burger with sharp cheddar showcase how simple elements can be transformed into unforgettable bites. If you're seeking something more adventurous, the Shrimp & Chorizo Creste Di Gallo Pasta impresses with a complex interplay of ancho chilis, smoked paprika crema, and fresh heirloom tomatoes, creating layers of smoky, zesty richness.
Customer experiences echo this appreciation for quality and atmosphere. Jason Alexander praises the incredible views paired with great food, despite a slow start in service that ultimately warmed up. Jenni Pickel highlights the exemplary service and the unique Arizona experience, recounting encounters with coyotes and owls that add a rare magic to dining here. Meanwhile, JAM points out the “upscale western flare” in dishes like scallops served with sweet potato mash and chipotle drizzle—though the spicy elements might be bold for some, it underscores the kitchen’s commitment to flavor depth and authenticity.
Whether you’re settling in for a celebratory night or an intimate lunch, Tonto Bar & Grill whispers of Southwest heritage with every bite and sip. The friendly, knowledgeable staff—like the attentive barkeep Johnny noted by regulars—adds a human touch that completes the experience, making it feel less like a restaurant visit and more like a warm invitation back home.
Overall, Tonto Bar & Grill is a must-visit destination for those seeking a harmonious blend of American steakhouse favorites, fresh seafood, and vibrant Southwestern tastes all served with genuine warmth and an unforgettable setting.
The food was great, and the view was incredible! The service wasn't amazing at first but after a few tables cleared the waitress became much friendlier! Overall a great night!
We had an excellent meal at Tonto‘s. The food was top rate. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was beyond compare. We heard a coyote, saw two owls, and waited at length for the Javelina‘s to show. It was an excellent Arizona experience!
Would like to see a few more taps including some darker beers. Johnny, our barkeep, was excellent and interesting. We ate and drank in the bar so no info on the restaurant.
Located in Hilton Vacation Club Rancho Manana Phoenix, Cave Creek. We have a table outside, and a backyard is a golf course. Our server was polite and pleasant. We're a total of four of us, Lunch Special Tacos, 2 of Shrimp Terra Cotta, Pork Osso Bucco, Four-Seed Baguette, and drinks. The taste was good. My taco was full of fresh vegetables, and the pork was tender. It was a little expensive for lunch, but it was a cozy place.
Homey feel inside and a nice outdoors seating in back. Food is good with their own take of upscale tastes of a western flare. Sometime too much spice. I had scallops that were served with a sweet potato mash with a Chipotle drizzle. Brussel Sprouts and fingerling potatoes all in the spicy potatoes mash. Too much heat.
BFF and I celebrated her birthday at Tonto Bar & Grill mid afternoon/mid week outside patio... Beautiful view, calm receptive service, and environment with Rose, named aptly, providing superior service. Recommending dishes on the menu, (which have remained patron favs for over 30 years) proved to be stellar selections. Recommending the nonalcoholic drinks paired with fish, yummy, wallaby, and more! Added to the fish plates, a light sauce, and sautéed vegies. Surprise, Birthday mini cake! Yes, we will visit again! Thank you, Rose .
A group of four of us really enjoyed our evening out at Tonto Bar & Grill. The Three Sisters Salsa & Guac was a hit with us and seemed to be on many tables around us. We all enjoyed fish for our main entrees. The Sanddabs was my choice and I sautéd fillets were nicely seasoned and cooked. Sides of snap peas, roasted carrots and mashed potatoes made the plate very satisfying. Others enjoyed the Walleye, Salmon and the special, Sea Bass. Cocktails were very good. The service was friendly and helpful.
Absolute gem. I was a bit disappointed when my group chose to eat here instead of venturing into Cave Creek but the Spanish southwestern ambiance and delicious and elevated dishes were lovely to look at and lovelier to eat. The calamari was some of the best ive ever had due to the picked sweet pea tomatoes sprinkled on top and my perfect accompaniment; spicy aoli. The summer salad with goat cheese and strawberries was fresh, bright, and delicious. The schnitzel (apparently a 10 year favorite and menu staple) and red cabbage with neon butter caper sauce was delivious and elevated and executed very well. If there was any downside, its that their price reflects their quality.
